Exam Preparation and Performance Insights
The STTC course offers committed students access to high-quality trial tests that closely replicate the format and difficulty of the actual Selective High School Placement Test. Through these simulated exams, students develop confidence and refine their test-taking strategies in a realistic exam environment. Our computer-based testing system is designed to enhance accuracy and optimise exam performance. After each test cycle, students and parents receive detailed performance reports that highlight strengths and areas for improvement, supporting meaningful collaboration with teachers during review sessions. Additionally, our selective school reference tool analyses STTC rankings and provides tailored school recommendations, helping families make informed decisions throughout the application process.

STTC Challenge: Retest System
The STTC Challenge is a personalised retest system developed by Pre-Uni New College to help students strengthen their understanding and improve performance across all subjects. By focusing on questions previously answered incorrectly, the program offers targeted revision that addresses individual learning gaps and reinforces key concepts through structured, tailored practice.
Did You Know?
Re-showing incorrect questions without additional support has proven to be an ineffective strategy for long-term improvement. Statistical data indicates that this approach does little to help students understand the reasoning behind their mistakes. Furthermore, without proper review records, parents struggle to track progress, making it challenging to monitor and support their child’s academic growth effectively.
What Is STTC Challenge?
The STTC Challenge is designed to reinforce understanding and boost performance through a structured review and retest cycle:
-
Review 5 Incorrect Questions
-
Students begin by reviewing a group of 5 questions they previously answered incorrectly.
-
These questions are selected to target specific areas needing improvement.
-
-
Active Retest Format
-
The review is delivered in a retest format, requiring students to reattempt each question.
-
This encourages active engagement and deeper understanding of the concepts.
-
-
Unlock Challenge Questions
-
After completing the review, students unlock a new set of Challenge Questions.
-
These are intentionally more difficult and designed to consolidate skills and promote higher-level thinking.
-
Why Is STTC Challlenge Important?
Re-showing incorrect questions without additional support has proven to be an ineffective strategy for long-term improvement. Statistical data indicates that this approach does little to help students understand the reasoning behind their mistakes. Furthermore, without proper review records, parents struggle to track progress, making it challenging to monitor and support their child’s academic growth effectively.
Why Is Retest Review System Important?
-
Effective Learning Feedback
-
During the review session, students are given clear explanations and the correct answers to questions they answered incorrectly.
-
This ensures that feedback is immediate, relevant, and focused on improving understanding.
-
-
Identifying Understanding Gaps
-
If students continue to struggle with the same questions—even after a week and even starting from easier ones—it signals a lack of true understanding.
-
This process helps to uncover deeper learning issues that need to be addressed.
-
-
Supporting Self-Recognition of Weaknesses
-
The STTC Challenge is designed to help students actively recognise their own learning gaps.
-
It encourages students to work systematically to overcome those weaknesses, leading to long-term improvement.
-
Why Independent Study Is Important?
-
Active Engagement Is Key
-
Attending classes or sitting exams alone is not enough for meaningful progress.
-
True skill development requires students to actively review their mistakes, reflect on their performance, and engage in repeated practice.
-
-
The Role of Independent Study in Academic Growth
-
Without dedicated independent study, achieving significant academic improvement is extremely difficult.
-
The STTC Challenge naturally builds habits of self-review, critical thinking, and continuous self-driven learning.
-
How Does STTC Challenge Work?
-
Question Retrieval:
The system automatically selects up to 15 incorrect questions per subject (Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills, and Reading) from recent tests, allowing students to focus on areas needing improvement. -
Question Sets:
Questions are grouped in sets of 5. The number of sets depends on how many mistakes the student made. -
Progression to Challenge Questions:
Students must complete all assigned sets to unlock new, more advanced challenge questions. This step-by-step structure strengthens understanding and builds confidence. -
Reading 1+1 Program:
Once all reading sets are complete, students receive a full-length Reading test for additional comprehension practice and exam preparation.
Year 5 STTC Program
In-Class Combuter Based Test
Students attending the course complete weekly computer-based tests under strict exam conditions, closely simulating the Selective High School Placement Test. Each week, students sit two timed exams, alternating between Reading & Writing and Mathematical Reasoning & Thinking Skills. To make full use of the allocated time, punctual attendance is essential. In accordance with NSW Department of Education rules, late arrivals will not be given extra time.
Exam Review
After each test, students participate in a Smart Review session using Pre-Uni New College’s interactive platform. This system synchronises student devices with the teacher’s screen, ensuring active engagement. Teachers conduct a Correct Answer Analysis to identify key performance trends and provide targeted feedback, allowing students to understand their mistakes and improve in specific areas.
Analytical Reporting
Comprehensive performance reports are available to both students and parents, offering detailed insights into individual strengths and weaknesses. The report compares student results to peer benchmarks and supports targeted skill development. These reports are also used during one-on-one consultations with subject matter experts, who provide personalised strategies for improvement.
STTC Homework
Students are encouraged to reinforce their learning by completing additional activities, homework, and review tasks provided through their workbooks and the Cyberschool platform. These resources vary by subject and are designed to consolidate understanding, strengthen skills, and support ongoing progress outside the classroom.
STTC Retest
Students are then encouraged to complete a retest, where applicable, to reinforce their understanding and improve performance. Retests provide an opportunity to revisit key concepts, address mistakes, and strengthen subject-specific skills through targeted practice.
Year 5 STTC Cyberschool
As part of the Year 5 STTC course, each student will receive access to Cyberschool, a personalised online learning portal. Cyberschool offers a range of supplementary resources—including practice questions, quizzes, and revision materials—that students can use at home to reinforce and extend their classroom learning.
STTC Workbook: Targeted Practice and Classroom Learning
Students receive a Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills workbook for additional practice. Available in both print and online CBT formats through Cyberschool, the workbook reinforces classroom learning and familiarises students with the exam environment.
Writing Re-Test
Students can refine their writing by rewriting responses to the same prompt, allowing for skill development through revision and reflection.
Poem and Reading Annotation Support
Annotation guides help students interpret poems and reading passages with depth and confidence. These tools foster critical thinking and provide lasting strategies for literary analysis, especially during the Reading Challenge Review.
STTC Review Challenge
To improve retention, students complete a targeted retest featuring questions they previously answered incorrectly. These are divided into sets of five, up to 15 questions, allowing for focused revision and skill enhancement beyond classroom review.
Top 5 Writing Exemplars
Students study top-scoring writing samples by arranging them in logical order, gaining insight into effective structure and coherence. Peer feedback activities further enhance their understanding of quality writing and support their own improvement.
Selective High School Choice Reference
Based on STTC performance, students receive a school recommendation guide categorised by subject strengths. This tool offers data-driven insights to help families make informed decisions when selecting selective high schools.
STTC Challenge Plus
After completing the Review Challenge, students receive advanced practice: five challenging questions each for Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills, and an additional Reading 1+1 set. This extension deepens analytical and comprehension skills.
Vocabulary Practice Test
To build language proficiency, students complete vocabulary tests based on curated word lists in the English Workbook, strengthening their understanding of essential English terms.
