Year 5 WEMT
The Year 5 WEMT program is strategically designed to deepen students’ core academic skills in preparation for more advanced learning and competitive assessments. Aligned with NSW curriculum standards, this integrated course strengthens writing, reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, and critical thinking. Through engaging and structured modules, students develop the confidence and capability to excel in their studies and beyond, including preparation for the Selective High School Test.
Writing
Writing lessons follow a structured three-week cycle aimed at developing students’ ability to write with clarity, purpose, and structure. Week one introduces a new text type and its key stylistic elements, guiding students through the planning process. In week two, students apply their knowledge in a timed writing task, which is then individually assessed. Week three provides targeted feedback, including group discussions and analysis of sample texts, helping students identify strengths and areas for improvement to refine their writing further.
English
The English module is divided into two streams, both promoting active teacher-student engagement. In the Standard stream, students explore a wide range of text types to strengthen their reading comprehension and develop a love for reading through stimulating questions. The Extension stream challenges students with deeper analysis of themes and authorial intent, fostering advanced interpretation and critical response skills necessary for academic excellence.
Mathematics
This course builds a solid foundation in mathematics by combining theoretical understanding with practical application. Students explore core concepts through well-structured lessons and a wide variety of problem-solving exercises. The course includes two distinct components: one focusing on content mastery and the other on test-style application to prepare students for selective school exams. This dual-stream approach ensures students are both confident in the classroom and competitive in high-stakes assessments.
Thinking Skills
The Thinking Skills component is designed to sharpen logical reasoning, problem-solving, and analytical thinking. Students work through complex scenarios that require them to evaluate arguments, identify assumptions, and make sound conclusions. This module nurtures intellectual agility and independent thought—critical attributes for academic and test success.
